On Saturday, September 5, 2026, starting at 11 a.m., the Solano County Genealogical Society will have Tina Beaird as our speaker. Her topic is Internet Archive for the Family Historian.
The Internet Archive website has become a must-visit site for genealogy and history, but how do you know you’re getting the most out of your search? Tina will help you navigate Internet Archive by showing you how to effectively use their advanced search features, featured collections and the WayBack Machine and to get the most out of your user experience.
Tina Beaird is the owner of Tamarack Genealogy and is the Genealogy/Local History Librarian at the Plainfield Public Library. She lectures extensively on military research, Scottish records, and archival preservation. She is First Vice President of the Illinois State Genealogical Society and board director for the Oswegoland Heritage Association. Tina volunteers her time with several local historical and genealogical societies scanning and indexing historic records. Occasionally, Tina finds time to research her own family tree, which she has been pursuing for over 25 years.

The Benefits of Joining Different Genealogy Societies (Discussion Group)
10:00 am Hybrid Meeting - Both on Zoom & at Vacaville Cultural Center Library
Join us on September 9th at 10 AM for the Solano County Genealogical Society’s Discussion Group meeting.
This meeting will be both in-person and on Zoom.
The in-person location is the Vacaville Cultural Center Library at 1020 Ulatis Drive.
For our topic we will be discussing is The Benefits of Joining Different Genealogy Societies.
Joining genealogy societies can make family history research faster, easier, and more rewarding. Different societies offer different strengths, so belonging to more than one can greatly expand your access to records, expertise, and networking opportunities.
A county or regional society may hold materials unavailable through large sites. Important non-online collections survive because genealogy societies maintain them. Many researchers belong to several societies because each one fills different research needs.
Roundtable Discussions are informal groups gathered to exchange or learn new ideas about each topic.
You have the option of attending in person at the library or virtually on Zoom.

World War Ⅱ Case Studies: Reconstructing Your Ancestors’ Service (Speaker Series)

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, starting at 11 a.m., the Solano County Genealogical Society will have Kristin Barcomb as our speaker.
Her topic is World War Ⅱ Case Studies: Reconstructing Your Ancestors’ Service.
Over 16 million men and women served in the U.S Armed Forces during WWII. KB Barcomb will provide strategies and methods for discovering their stories. She will show us what individual and unit records are available, where to find them, and resources to help interpret their content and context. Case study examples illustrate the value of fully leveraging resources.
KB Barcomb specializes in World War I and World War II records, resources, and research methodology. Her focus is on understanding the chronology and context of military records, so as to more accurately interpret and analyze their content thereby helping others successfully research their ancestors’ wartime service.
She is passionate about sharing the many nuances and details discoverable in service and war-era records. She has taught classes for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), co-taught the course Researching U.S. Ancestors: 1917-1930 for the Genealogy Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and taught a course on WWI research for the Applied Genealogy Institute.
KB has conducted onsite research at National Archives I & II, the National Archives at Atlanta and Kansas City, the US Army Heritage and Education Center, the Air Force Historical Research Agency, the National WWI Museum, the National Security Agency Museum, the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum plus various state and university archives.
She is a retired US Army officer with over 20 years active service, a self-acknowledged history nerd, and the late-in-life daughter of two WWII veterans. She is a member of the Society for Military History and the Association of Professional Genealogists.

30 Types of Maps Useful in Genealogy (Speaker Series)

On Saturday, November 7, 2026, starting at 11 a.m., the Solano County Genealogical Society will have Margaret (Peg) Kapustiak as our speaker. Her topic is: “30 Types of Maps Useful in Genealogy”.
Maps can unlock details about a family or lead researchers to new resources. Her presentation, will cover various kinds of maps, and look at details included and not included in maps. She will offer suggestions on locating maps for Europe and the USA. Her presentations are designed to provide you with extremely practical tips and ideas.
Margaret (Peg) Kapustiak’s has been a Genealogist/Family Historian for 48 years and has researched her family history in the Chicago area, the Midwest, New England, and New York state plus ten countries in both Europe and Asia, when she lived overseas. She has provided over 200 talks to organizations both nationally and internationally. She is the author of two books and 58 research articles. The last book on Venice, Florida was written for their 100 Anniversary of Incorporation as a city.
She currently volunteers at five historical/genealogical organizations and is on the Board of South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society, as their Strategic Planner and conducts their monthly Website SIG (Special Interest Group), specializing on the 50 states and internationally. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

Researching Military Records (Discussion Group)

Join us on November 11th at 10 AM on Zoom for the Solano County Genealogical Society’s Genealogy Discussion Group meeting.
We will be discussing Researching Military Records. Our focus will be on finding U.S. military documents from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War through modern conflicts, including draft cards, service records, pension files, casualty lists, and photos.
Roundtable Discussions are informal groups gathered to exchange or learn new ideas about each topic.
